Vivekananda Gold Cup football competition
The Vivekananda Gold Cup Football Competition, held every July, has been a much-anticipated sporting event in Asansol, hosted at different venues over the years—Polo Ground (2011–2014), Loco Ground (2015–2018), and since 2019 at B.U.C Ground, Burnpur. The tournament features eight local teams from the Asansol region and aims to promote sports development and community engagement. The event has been graced by eminent personalities, including ex-Indian footballers, who inspire the participants and audience alike. Alongside the competition, several post-event activities are organized, such as the distribution of trophies for winners, runners-up, and the best player, along with prize money. In keeping with its humanitarian and educational mission, the organizers also distribute scholarships to students—including special support for blind students—and extend scholarships to those pursuing higher education in prestigious institutions like IIT Kharagpur. Additionally, cheques are given to cancer and thalassemia patients, while wheelchairs and tricycles are distributed to those in need. Since its inception, Asansol Pragati has awarded more than 120 scholarships and distributed over 100 wheelchairs, making the tournament not only a celebration of football but also a platform for social welfare and community service.
